Refrigerator troubleshooting
Refrigerator troubleshooting starts with a thermometer, the door gasket, and airflow. The compressor and refrigerant are not a home project.
A refrigerator with the door set aside. Refrigerant stays in the sealed system and is not drawn here.
- Door. The door, pulled forward.
- Gasket. The seal on the door. A gap here warms the food.
- Shelf. A shelf in the fresh-food section.
- Crisper. A drawer at the bottom for produce.
- Cabinet. The outer box.
- Condenser coils. The coil cover, usually along the bottom front or the back. Dust there is a cleaning job, not a refrigerant job.
Put a thermometer in a glass of water in the refrigerator and another between frozen packages. The FDA benchmark is 40°F or below in the refrigerator and 0°F in the freezer. A display that says 37 while the milk is at 50 is a cooling problem, not a settings success. Give a newly delivered refrigerator up to 24 hours with the doors closed before you decide it has failed.
This refrigerator troubleshooting guide splits the work into what you can see and what you should not open. Dirty condenser coils, a blocked vent, a door left ajar, and a warm garage are owner checks. The sealed system — compressor, refrigerant lines, and the charge inside them — is technician work. Do not pierce a line or add refrigerant from an automotive can.
The pattern that matters
- Both compartments warm, and the compressor is silent or only clicks: stop. That can be a control or a compressor problem, including models LG has covered under specific serial-number programs. Check the serial on the maker's site rather than assuming a failure.
- Freezer is cold and the refrigerator is warm: think airflow. A damper, a fan, or frost on the evaporator can block the path. The general version is refrigerator not cooling.
- The freezer will not hold 0°F: freezer not freezing.
- Food is cold and the only complaint is ice: ice maker not working.
- Water on a shelf or on the floor, while the food is still cold: refrigerator leaking water.
- Food is freezing in the fresh-food section: refrigerator freezing food.
- The glass fills with nothing: refrigerator water dispenser not working.
- You need the FDA targets and a thermometer: what temperature a refrigerator should be.
- The shelves need a wash, not a repair: how to clean a refrigerator.
- Frost has built up and the manual allows a manual defrost: how to defrost a freezer.
Noise, before you assume a failure
Refrigerator noises troubleshooting and refrigerator noise troubleshooting are often about a fan, a water valve filling the ice maker, or a click as the compressor starts. A new or harsher rattle, a buzz that never stops, or a click every few minutes with no cooling is worth a service call. Troubleshooting refrigerator problems of that sort does not start by removing the back panel while the unit is plugged in.
Brand notes
How to fix a refrigerator still starts with the thermometer, the gaskets, and the coils, then the brand guide.
Whirlpool refrigerator troubleshooting for a warm fresh-food section is in Whirlpool refrigerator not cooling. Whirlpool side by side refrigerator troubleshooting uses the same thermometer test. The vents and the damper sit in different places than on a French-door cabinet, so follow the diagram in that model's manual. A new Whirlpool that has not had 24 hours is not a failed compressor yet.
GE refrigerator troubleshooting, including GE Profile refrigerator troubleshooting, belongs on GE's model lookup. Troubleshooting GE refrigerator controls without the model number mixes boards that do not share codes. GE Profile lines still follow the airflow split above.
Samsung refrigerator troubleshooting for a warm cabinet is in Samsung refrigerator not cooling, and ice complaints are in Samsung refrigerator not making ice. Troubleshooting Samsung refrigerator frost on some French-door models is a known airflow problem. One careful manual defrost is a test. If the frost returns, stop. Do not chip ice.
LG refrigerator troubleshooting for loss of cooling is in LG refrigerator not cooling. LG has offered extra coverage for specific linear-compressor serial ranges. Enter the serial on LG's site. Do not treat every warm LG as a compressor story. Freezer-compartment complaints are in LG freezer not freezing.
Frigidaire refrigerator troubleshooting for ice is in Frigidaire ice maker not working. KitchenAid refrigerator troubleshooting and Maytag refrigerator troubleshooting often meet Whirlpool-family parts, but the model tag decides. Jenn Air refrigerator troubleshooting is a JennAir model: use JennAir support for that number, not a Whirlpool French-door photo.
Bosch refrigerator troubleshooting and Thermador refrigerator troubleshooting should stay with those brands' manuals. Their filter locations and ice-maker controls are not the Whirlpool layout. Sub zero refrigerator troubleshooting is the same warning with a higher cost of a wrong part: use Sub-Zero's assistance page and the model, and keep condenser cleaning on the maintenance checklist.
Amana refrigerator troubleshooting follows Amana's support after the thermometer test. Kenmore refrigerator troubleshooting and Kenmore Elite refrigerator troubleshooting depend on the company that built that Kenmore. Read the model tag before you search a code.
Troubleshooting a refrigerator and troubleshooting refrigerator, as a pair of searches, still land on the same first hour: temperatures, doors, coils, and airflow. The brand pages exist so that hour does not turn into a made-up code.

Samsung refrigerator not making ice: freezer, water, and the bucket
A Samsung refrigerator not making ice needs a freezer at 0°F, an open water supply, a seated bucket, and the maker switched on.

Refrigerator not cooling: temperature, coils, and airflow
A refrigerator not cooling needs a thermometer, not a guess from the door dial.

Frigidaire ice maker not working: shutoff, filter, and freezer
A Frigidaire ice maker not working needs a freezer at 0°F, water turned on, the bucket seated, and the maker switched on the way that model's manual describes.

LG refrigerator not cooling: read the tag before the compressor story
An LG refrigerator not cooling needs a thermometer and the model tag before any talk of a compressor.

Freezer not freezing: measure 0°F before you call the cabinet dead
A freezer not freezing is a storage problem, not a door that merely feels chilly.

Whirlpool ice maker not working: temperature, water, and the control for that model
A whirlpool ice maker not working needs a freezer at 0°F, an open water supply, a bucket that is seated, and the maker switched on.

Ice maker not working: cold, water, a seated bucket, and the switch

A Samsung refrigerator not cooling needs a thermometer and a look at the display before any parts are blamed.

Refrigerator leaking water: inside shelf, freezer, and floor
A refrigerator leaking water is a location problem first.

LG freezer not freezing: temperature, frost, and the serial tag
An LG freezer not freezing needs a thermometer in the food, not a guess from the door shelf.
