How to clean a refrigerator is the food compartment, the door gasket, and the drawers. It is not a repair for a warm cabinet and it is not a leak repair. Read the temperature first, using what temperature a refrigerator should be. If the food is already above 40°F, deal with the food using the FDA guidance on that page before you start a long clean. Water on the floor is refrigerator leaking water.

Refrigerator shelves and drawers that can be wiped after food is moved
Move food to a cooler. Wash shelves the manual says may come out.

Shelves, drawers, and the gasket

Unplug the refrigerator if you will pull it out. For a shelf wash you can leave it running only if you can move the food to a cooler and finish before the cabinet warms. Take out drawers the manual says lift out. Wash them with dish soap and water. Dry them. Wipe the walls with a damp cloth. Do not soak the controls. Wipe the door gasket and the strike face. A torn gasket is a parts order, not a scrub.

How to clean refrigerator coils

How to clean refrigerator coils, and how to clean refrigerator condenser coils, means the condenser the manual shows, usually underneath behind a toe kick or on the back. Unplug first. Vacuum the surface the guide exposes. Do not tip the cabinet alone, and do not remove a panel that covers refrigerant lines. Dusty coils can keep a cabinet from rejecting heat. They are also discussed in refrigerator not cooling. A coil vacuum does not fix a freezer full of frost. That job, when the manual allows a manual defrost, is how to defrost a freezer.

How to clean fridge water dispenser

How to clean fridge water dispenser trays is the drip tray you can lift, washed with soap, if the manual shows a tray that comes out. Do not open the inner door. A dispenser that gives no water is refrigerator water dispenser not working, not a deeper scrub. Replace a filter only on the schedule and in the location the manual prints.

At or below 40°F in the refrigerator and 0°F in the freezer before you treat this as a cleaning day.

  2. Empty and wash what the manual lets you remove

Shelves and drawers. Dry them. Wipe the gasket.

  3. Vacuum coils only where the manual shows them

Unplug. Do not open sealed-system covers.

  4. Wash a dispenser tray only if it lifts out

    Leave the door cavity closed.

Questions readers ask

How often should the coils be vacuumed?

Follow the interval in the manual. Many manuals say about twice a year, sooner if you have pets. This site is not publishing a lab interval of its own.

Can I use bleach inside the refrigerator?

Only if the manual allows a diluted bleach wipe on that liner, and only at the strength it prints. When it does not, use dish soap and water. Do not mix bleach with vinegar.

The dispenser tray is clean and there is still no water. What next?

That is the dispenser guide: the supply valve you can identify, and a filter only if the manual shows one. Do not open the door panel.

Does a clean gasket fix a warm refrigerator?

A dirty gasket can leak air. If the thermometer stays above 40°F after the doors shut for several hours, cleaning is finished and the not-cooling guide applies.
