Appliance error code library

Codes are model-specific. This library covers codes that show up across many current manuals, and it tells you when a chart would be a guess.

An error code is a report from one control board about one model family. The same letters on a different brand, or on a different year of the same brand, can mean something else. Use this page to recognize codes that many current manuals share, then confirm the line in the manual for the model number on your machine. If your display is a pattern of blinks instead of letters, do not borrow a chart. GE in particular documents those patterns by model.

Whirlpool dishwasher troubleshooting codes, on many recent Whirlpool dishwashers, include F8 E1 when the drain takes too long. Maytag dishwasher troubleshooting codes overlap that set on many Maytag dishwashers built on Whirlpool platforms. Older Maytag controls used different diagnostics. Read the tech sheet. The practical drain steps are in Whirlpool dishwasher not draining and the general dishwasher not draining guide.

Codes you can look up here

Whirlpool washer F9 E1

On many Whirlpool washers, F9 E1 means the machine did not drain in the time the control allows. Check the hose, the standpipe, and the coin trap if the model has one. Details: Whirlpool washer not draining.

Whirlpool washer F8 E1

On many Whirlpool washers, F8 E1 points to low or no incoming water. Confirm the taps, the hoses, and the inlet screens. This is not the dishwasher drain code with the same characters.

Whirlpool dishwasher F8 E1

Many Whirlpool dishwashers show F8 E1 when draining is too slow. Clean the filter and the drain path before you replace a pump.

Bosch dishwasher E22

E22, on many Bosch dishwashers, means the filter is blocked. Remove and rinse the filter the manual describes. Do not scrub it with a scouring pad that tears the mesh.

Bosch dishwasher E25

E25 on many Bosch models points to the drain pump or a restriction in the hose. If the filter is clean and the hose is clear and the code returns, stop and call for service.

Bosch dishwasher E15

E15 means water is in the base pan on many Bosch dishwashers. That is a leak into the safety pan. Do not keep running cycles to "see if it clears."

Samsung washer 5C or 5E

Many Samsung washers use 5C or 5E for a drain problem. 4C or 4E is the water-supply code, UE is an unbalanced load, dC or dE is the door, and Sud means too many suds. Confirm the spelling on your panel in the Samsung manual.

LG washer OE

On many LG washers, OE is drain, IE is inlet water, UE is unbalanced, and dE is the door. LE refers to the motor. If LE returns after you restore power, stop. Do not open the motor.

LG dryer d80, d90, d95

Many LG dryers with Flow Sense show d80, d90, or d95 when airflow is restricted. Clean the lint screen and the duct before you replace a heater. See LG dryer not heating.

Samsung dryer tC or tE

Many Samsung dryers use tC or tE for a temperature-sensor circuit. Confirm it for your model. Do not bypass the high-limit thermostat because a code mentioned heat.

Codes this library will not print

GE, GE Profile, GE Cafe, and GE Adora dishwashers often communicate with lights rather than a stable letter code. The pattern is in GE's support for that model. Guessing the blinks can replace the wrong board. Older refrigerators may have no user code at all, only a service mode a technician opens. If your manual does not list the code on the display, treat the code as unidentified.
