Washer not filling with water

A washer not filling with water leaves the drum dry, or barely wet, when the fill should be running. A washing machine not filling with water is the same complaint. Why is my washer not filling with water, why is my washing machine not filling up with water, and a washer not filling up with water all start at the wall, not inside the tub. A washing machine not filling with enough water is the milder version: some water arrives, then it stops short of the line the manual describes for that cycle.

A top load washing machine not filling with water and a top load washer not filling with water use the lid and the same two hoses. A front load washer not filling with water uses the door and the same two hoses. The brand on the badge does not change the first checks. Brand-specific fill codes belong in a later guide for that badge, after you confirm the model.

Both taps have to be open. A kink at the wall looks like a valve that failed.

Water inlet valve washing machine

A water inlet valve for washing machine repairs is the part on the back of the cabinet where the hoses connect. A washing machine water inlet valve is that part, not the handle on the laundry tap. Washing machine water inlet valve on or off is a question about those wall taps. Both the hot and the cold tap should be open if the install guide uses both. A tap handle that feels open but is spun the wrong way still blocks the hose. Look at the hose, not the knob story.

Replacing the valve means the washer is unplugged, both taps are closed, and you are following that model's install steps. This page stops at the hoses and at screens the manual shows. Do not open the valve, jumper its wires, or cap one side so the other runs.

A top loader that will not fill is still a supply check first, not a spin problem.

What you can see with the water off

Unplug the washer. Close both taps. If a coupling is already wet, treat it as a leak and use washing machine leaking from the bottom instead of loosening it further. With the taps closed, you may disconnect a hose only if you can catch the water left in it and the floor is dry. A kink you can straighten, or a screen the manual says to rinse, is the owner check. If the manual does not show a screen, do not dig in the coupling with a pick.

A load that will not fill and also will not spin is two faults. Do not bypass a lid switch to test the fill. If the tub is full and will not empty, that is washer not draining, not a closed tap.

Checks in order

  1. Open both taps

Hot and cold, if the install guide uses both. Confirm water is actually available at a nearby faucet.

  2. Unplug, then look at the hoses

A kink behind the washer is enough to stop a fill. Straighten it without tipping the machine onto its side.

  3. Close the taps before a coupling comes off

Catch the water in the hose. Rinse a screen only when the manual shows one. Put the hose back before you open the tap.

  4. Leave the inlet valve closed as a part

Do not disassemble it and do not bypass it. If the taps and hoses are fine and the drum stays dry, hire a technician.

  5. Separate a full tub from a dry tub

Water that will not leave is the drain guide. Water that never arrived is this page.

Questions readers ask

Why is my washer not filling up with water if the taps feel open?

A handle can sit between open and closed, or the hose can be kinked flat behind the cabinet. Confirm a nearby faucet runs, then look at the hose with the washer unplugged.

Is the water inlet valve the tap on the wall?

No. The wall handles are the shutoffs. The water inlet valve is the part on the washer where the hoses attach. This guide does not tell you to open that valve body.

Can I run the washer on only the cold hose?

Only if the manual for that model says a single supply is allowed. Do not cap a hose and hope. A missing supply can look like a failed valve.

The washer filled a little and stopped. Is that a drain problem?

Not yet. A washing machine not filling with enough water is still a supply check: taps, kinks, and a screen the manual shows. A tub that filled and will not empty is the drain guide.
