Samsung washer not spinning: door, suds, drain, and balance

A Samsung washer not spinning is documented by model on Samsung support. On many Samsung washers the display uses 4C or 4E for the water supply, 5C or 5E for the drain, UE for an unbalanced load, dC or dE for the door, and Sud for too many suds. Confirm every one of those codes in the manual for your exact model. Samsung's manuals also say to remove the shipping bolts before the first cycle. An older Whirlpool direct-drive coupling is a different machine, covered in Whirlpool washer not spinning, and it is not the teardown for this drum.

Why is my Samsung washer not spinning

Why is my Samsung washer not spinning depends on the code and on whether water is still in the tub. When my Samsung washer is not spinning, I write the code down before I move clothes. A Samsung washer not spinning or draining, especially with 5C or 5E, still has water to remove. The spin step waits. A Samsung washer drum not spinning after the tub is empty is then a balance problem, a door that did not lock, leftover suds, or a mechanical stop such as shipping bolts.

Shared hose and standpipe layout, if the code is a drain code, is in washer not draining. GE's one to two minute unplug is that brand's control reset, explained in GE washer not draining, and it does not unlock a Samsung door or clear UE. Use Samsung's manual for any power-reset note on this model.

A small item caught in the gasket can keep the door from locking, and the drum will not spin until it does.

Door, balance, and suds

dC or dE on many models means the door is not locked. Look for a sock in the gasket, close the door until it latches, and wait for the lock. Do not bypass the door lock. If the lock never happens and the code remains, stop. Forcing the door open while it is locked can break the latch. The manual describes when the lock releases after a cycle is cancelled.

UE means the load is unbalanced on many Samsung washers. One wet bathrobe on one side, or a nearly empty drum with two towels, will pause the spin. When the lock releases, open the door and spread the clothes evenly. Add a couple of similar items to a tiny load. Do not add one heavy rug to "balance" a light load. Sud means too much detergent or a non-HE product. Run a rinse with no detergent after the foam drops. A second cap of soap brings the pause back.

Active WaterJet and VRT models

A Samsung Active WaterJet washer not spinning still has to lock the door, finish the drain, and balance the load. The WaterJet is a wash feature on certain Samsung front-loaders, not a second spin motor. If a pretreat step left the door short of the latch, close it fully and start a spin the manual allows. The jet nozzle being present does not change UE, Sud, or a 5C drain code. Confirm the feature name on your console against the manual so you are not following steps for a different series.

A Samsung VRT washer not spinning is a front-loader that uses Samsung's vibration-reduction hardware. VRT does not cancel an unbalanced load. Shipping bolts left in place will hold the drum and defeat that system. The manual shows where the bolts sit and which wrench came with the washer. If a new machine walks across the floor or the drum feels rigid when you press it, compare the cabinet with that drawing before another cycle. Top-load Samsung washers are a different layout. Use the manual's lid-lock and balance notes for those, and do not look for a VRT bolt pattern that the book does not show.

Checks that follow the code

  1. Write down the code and open the manual

Match UE, dC, dE, 5C, 5E, Sud, 4C, or 4E to the table in your manual. If the display shows a code this page does not name, do not invent a meaning. Use Samsung's page for that model. A child-lock icon can block buttons. The manual shows the icon. There is no single hold-time for every Samsung washer.

  2. If water is still in the drum, drain first

A spin will not finish a 5C or 5E tub. Many Samsung front-loaders have a small filter behind a lower cover. Open it only if the manual draws it, with the washer unplugged, and open it slowly because water spills. Many top-loaders have no such door. Do not pry a panel the manual does not show.

  3. Rebalance after UE

Wait until the door unlocks. Spread the load. Keep one heavy item from sitting alone. Restart the spin cycle the manual names. If UE returns on a load that is clearly even, stop. The suspension or a sensor is no longer a laundry-sorting job.

  4. Clear the door and the suds

Wipe the gasket, remove debris at the latch, and close the door. If Sud is stored, rinse without detergent. Measured HE detergent is what these washers are built for. Powder or liquid piled past the cap line is a repeat visit to the same code.

  5. On a new install, check the shipping bolts

Samsung tells you to remove the shipping bolts before the first cycle. Use the manual's diagram and the wrench that shipped with the washer. If the drum still will not turn by hand after those bolts are out and the power is unplugged, stop. Do not put a bar through the spider to force it.

Washer guides are grouped under washing machines. The codes named on this page are also listed, with the same limits, at error codes.

What a technician will ask

Have the model number, the exact code, and whether water was still in the drum. Say whether you redistributed the load, whether Sud followed a non-HE dose, and whether shipping bolts were still in a new machine. Mention Active WaterJet or VRT only if those words are on your console, so the visit matches the series. A drum that turns freely by hand but will not spin in a cycle is a different report from a drum that is mechanically locked.

Questions readers ask

Why does my Samsung washer stop right before spin?

On many models the cycle is waiting on a drain, a lock, or balance. 5C or 5E means the water did not leave, UE means the load is off to one side, and dC or dE means the door. Confirm the letters in your manual. Redistribute clothes only after the lock releases. If the tub is empty, the door locks, and the same code returns, stop and hire a technician.

Does Active WaterJet change how the drum spins?

The jet is a wash feature on certain Samsung washers. It does not replace the spin motor, the door lock, or the drain. A Samsung Active WaterJet washer that will not spin still needs a latched door, a balanced load, and an empty tub. Check the code the same way you would on another Samsung front-loader, and use the manual if the jet door or nozzle is part of that model's latch.

What if this is a VRT washer?

VRT is Samsung's vibration-reduction setup on certain front-loaders. It still pauses for UE, a bad door lock, suds, and a failed drain. Shipping bolts left installed will keep the drum from the motion VRT expects. Remove bolts only as the manual draws them. If the drum will not rotate by hand after the bolts are out and the washer is unplugged, stop.

The washer is brand new and the drum seems stuck. What should I check?

Shipping bolts. Samsung's manuals say to remove them before the first cycle. The diagram shows the locations and the wrench. A drum that will not rock slightly is often still bolted for transport. If the bolts are already out and the drum still will not turn with the power unplugged, do not force it. Have the retailer or a technician look before another cycle.

Can I ignore 5C and just set a spin-only cycle?

Spin-only still needs the water gone and the door locked. A 5C or 5E drain fault will usually return, and the clothes stay wet. Check the hose and the filter cover if your manual shows one, with the washer unplugged and a pan ready. If the code remains, hire a technician. Do not open a pump housing the manual does not treat as a homeowner cleanout.
