Whirlpool dryer not heating: separate a dead heater from a blocked vent

If you are asking why is my whirlpool dryer not heating, start with the model tag, not with a new heating element. A whirlpool dryer not heating up while the drum still turns is the usual report: the load tumbles, the air at the door stays cool, and the cycle ends damp. Write down gas or electric from the tag. Those two machines do not share the next test. Treat dryer not heating whirlpool as an electric-dryer path only after you have read that tag.

Whirlpool's own steps for a model live at producthelp.whirlpool.com. Open the page that matches your model number. This article follows the checks Whirlpool and the CPSC allow a household to do: the lint screen, the duct, the outdoor hood, and, on an electric dryer, the double breaker. It does not include a wiring diagram, a fuse bypass, or a gas-valve adjustment.

Lint-screen habits, hood checks, and the reason a thermal fuse opens are shared by every brand. They are written out in the dryer not heating guide. Use that page for the full vent walk-through, then come back for the Whirlpool breaker test and the gas stop. A Samsung dryer not heating and an LG dryer not heating show different codes for a blocked duct. Do not paste those codes onto a Whirlpool panel.

Electric Whirlpool: one pole can kill only the heat

Many U.S. electric dryers use a double-pole 240-volt breaker. If one pole opens, the drum can still turn and the heater stays cold. Reset by moving the breaker fully off, then on. A breaker that looks on can be tripped in the middle. If it trips again, call an electrician. Do not hold the handle in or swap in a larger breaker.

After one successful reset, run a timed dry with a small load of damp towels for several minutes. The air at the open door should warm. If my whirlpool dryer is not heating after that reset, leave the element alone and check airflow next. Power is present enough to turn the drum. Heat is still missing, and a crushed vent is the common reason the safety devices have opened.

Clean the lint screen every load. A blocked screen is the start of the vent problem that opens a thermal fuse.

The hood flapper and the thermal fuse

Clean the lint screen every load. The Consumer Product Safety Commission tells households to keep the duct and the outdoor hood clear as well. Their dryer-vent guidance is at the CPSC clothes-dryer page. Start the dryer and watch the outdoor hood. A flapper that does not open means the duct is blocked or disconnected. A flapper buried in lint is the same message.

A thermal fuse often opens after a blocked dryer vent. Replacing the fuse without clearing the vent repeats the failure. Do not bypass the fuse, and do not follow a wiring sketch from another model. Once the screen and the hood are clear, a dryer that still tumbles cold needs a technician who can test the fuse and the heater with the service manual and the plug pulled. Opening the cabinet is not a step in this article.

Timed dry, sensor dry, and gas

If a sensor cycle stops while clothes are damp, but a timed cycle blows hot air, the heater works. The moisture-sensing bars may be coated. Use the cleaning note on Whirlpool's page for that model if the manual shows those bars. That wipe does not revive a dead heater. If timed dry is cold too, you do not have a sensor problem.

On a gas Whirlpool, stop before any gas valve or orifice. No heat plus the smell of gas is an emergency: leave, and call the gas utility from outside. No heat without that smell is still not a home adjustment. The electric breaker test does not restore a gas burner. Tell the technician the tag says gas so the visit starts on the right fuel.

Whirlpool checks before the cabinet comes apart

  1. Read fuel type and the model

Copy the model number and the word gas or electric from the tag. Open that model on Whirlpool's product-help site. Set aside any Samsung or LG code list. If the tag says gas, skip the breaker test and use the stop note for gas.

  2. Reset the electric breaker once

For an electric dryer, move the double-pole breaker fully off, then on. Run a short timed dry. Warm air means the pole was open. A second trip means an electrician, not another reset.

  3. Clean the screen and watch the hood

Pull the lint screen, wash it if the manual says a film can block it, and dry it before it goes back. Start the dryer and look outside. The hood flapper should move. If it stays shut, the duct is the problem to clear before any parts order.

  4. Compare timed dry with a sensor cycle

If you have heat on timed dry only, follow Whirlpool's sensor-cleaning note for that model. If both cycles stay cold, the sensor is not your fix. Do not keep switching cycles hoping the element will recover.

  5. Leave the thermal fuse alone

If the vent was blocked and the electric dryer still has no heat, assume a safety device may have opened. Do not jump it out and do not splice a wire. Schedule service after the duct is actually clear so the new check does not fail the same way.

  6. Stop for gas, sparks, or a hot drum that will not turn

Smell of gas, a scorched door, or heat with no tumbling ends the home test. Unplug an electric dryer. For gas, follow the utility's instruction if you smell gas. Do not open the burner panel.

A drum that turns while the load stays room temperature is a no-heat problem, not a short cycle.

After the air is warm again

Finish one timed cycle and feel the load, not just the door rim. Warm air for ten minutes that still leaves heavy towels soaking wet can be an airflow limit, not a second heater fault. Recheck the hood. If the air never warms, the breaker and vent checks are done and the stop note is the next step.

Dryer articles are collected under dryers. Vent cleaning reminders sit with maintenance and cleaning. A drum that heats and does not turn is covered in dryer not spinning but heating, and that page starts by telling you to unplug the machine.

Questions readers ask

The drum turns and the air stays cold. What failed?

On an electric Whirlpool, a drum that turns with no heat often means one pole of the 240-volt breaker is open, or the heater circuit opened after a blocked vent. Reset the breaker fully off, then on, once. Confirm the outdoor hood flapper moves when the dryer runs. If the breaker trips again, or the hood never opens, stop. Do not replace a thermal fuse until the vent is clear, and do not bypass the fuse.

How is a gas Whirlpool different?

The tag inside the door or on the cabinet states gas or electric. A gas dryer does not use the electric 240-volt heater test. If you smell gas, leave the house and call the gas utility. Do not adjust a gas valve or an orifice, and do not keep restarting the cycle. A qualified technician handles the burner. Electric checks in this article do not apply to that cabinet.

Clothes are damp, but the dryer does get hot on timed dry.

Then the heater is not dead. A sensor cycle can end early when the moisture bars inside the drum are filmed over, while timed dry still heats. Whirlpool's support page for that model describes how to clean those bars if the manual shows them. Wiping a sensor does not restore a heater that stays cold on timed dry. If timed dry is also cold, go back to the breaker and the vent.

Does Whirlpool use the same heat codes as Samsung or LG?

No. Many Samsung dryers show tC or tE for a temperature sensor, and many LG dryers show Flow Sense or d80, d90, or d95 for restricted airflow. Confirm any of those in the manual for that exact model. This Whirlpool article does not assign those codes to a Whirlpool display. Use Whirlpool's own site for the model you have, and confirm any code there.

The dryer is hot and the drum is not turning. Is that this problem?

No. Unplug it. Heat without tumbling is a fire risk, and it is a different failure from a whirlpool dryer not heating. A loose drum with a motor that still runs often means a broken belt. Opening the cabinet is only for someone following that model's service manual with the dryer unplugged. Use the guide on a dryer that heats but does not spin, and leave this no-heat path.
