How to clean a dishwasher

How to clean a dishwasher is maintenance, not a repair. The job is the filter, the edge of the door, and whatever film the manual lets you rinse off. How to clean dishwasher filter gunk is the part that actually changes the next load. A tablet on top of a packed filter does not reach the spray arms.

Rinse the filter your manual shows. Many tubs hide it under the lower spray arm.

Empty the machine first

How to clean dishwasher tubs starts with an empty rack. Pull both racks. Shake crumbs into the trash, not back into the tub. Look under the lower rack for a filter cover. On many current models the cover twists out. Some tubs have no user filter. If you do not see one, do not pry at the tub floor. The manual for the model on the door edge is the map.

Clean dishwasher debris is usually seeds, glass, and labels. Rinse the screen under the tap until the holes are open. Seat it the way it came out. A filter left on the counter is how the next cycle throws food through the pump. That is also how a wash looks weak. Cloudy glasses after a dirty filter are covered in dishwasher not cleaning, which is the repair path, not this rinse.

How to clean your dishwasher with vinegar

How to clean dishwasher with vinegar is a cup of white vinegar on the top rack, not a pour into the detergent cup and not a mix with bleach. Run the hottest cycle the manual names for cleaning, with the machine empty. If the manual forbids vinegar, or it names a branded cleaner only, follow the manual. Stainless interiors and rubber gaskets are not a chemistry experiment.

How to clean your dishwasher when the smell is sour is usually that filter plus the gasket fold at the bottom of the door. Wipe the gasket with a damp cloth. Do not cut it. A torn gasket is a leak, and the leak guide is dishwasher leaking from the bottom.

What a clean cycle will not fix

Clean dishwasher filter work will not empty a tub that is still full at the end of a cycle. That is a drain path: the hose, the air gap, or the disposal knockout. Start with dishwasher not draining. It will not heat a wash that stays cold. It will not replace a spray arm that does not turn. Spin the lower arm by hand with the machine off. If it is blocked by a fallen utensil, move the utensil. If the arm is cracked, stop. Ordering a part is fine. Opening the pump is not this page.

Checks in order

  1. Read the model manual

Find the filter drawing. If the manual shows no user filter, do not unscrew the tub.

  2. Rinse the filter

Twist out only the part the drawing shows. Rinse it. Put it back before you start a cycle.

  3. Wipe the gasket

Use a damp cloth on the door seal you can see. Do not peel it off.

  4. One empty hot cycle

Use the cleaner the manual names, or a cup of white vinegar on the top rack when the manual allows vinegar. Do not mix vinegar and bleach.

  5. Stop if water remains or leaks

A clean filter does not repair a drain or a door. Switch guides instead of running the cycle again.

Questions readers ask

Can I run vinegar and a bleach pod in the same cycle?

No. Vinegar and bleach together make chlorine gas. Use one approach the manual allows, on an empty machine, and rinse the filter first. If the manual names a branded cleaner and says nothing about vinegar, use that cleaner.

The filter looks clean and the glasses are still spotted. What next?

Spots are a wash problem, not another rinse of a clear screen. Check that the spray arm turns and that the manual's rinse aid, if the model has a dispenser, is actually filled. The not-cleaning guide separates film, spots, and a dead wash.

How often should the filter come out?

When you can see food in it, and on a short schedule if your water leaves slime within a month. There is no single week count for every brand. The drawing in the manual is the limit of what you should remove.

Does this replace a repair if the dishwasher smells and also holds water?

No. Smell with an empty tub can be the gasket. Water left after the cycle is a drain fault. Clean the filter once so you are not chasing food, then follow the drain guide. Do not keep adding vinegar to a tub that will not empty.
