Dishwasher leaking from bottom: door gasket, suds, or water under the tub

Split the puddle before you move the machine. Droplets on the lower gasket, or a wet strip on the floor at the door edge, show up while the wash is spraying. A dry gasket with water under the toe kick is a different path. The manual for the model on the frame says which filter you may touch and what a code means.

Why is my dishwasher leaking, and why is my dishwasher leaking from the bottom, are that split. A dishwasher leaking from bottom of door wets the door edge. A dishwasher leaking from underneath leaves the gasket dry. If my dishwasher is leaking, either path fits.

A wet door edge during the wash

Dishwasher leaking from door shows up as a wet line on the gasket or as drips off the bottom edge. A dishwasher door leaking during the wash is that same edge. Watch it only on a dry floor, with a dry outlet under the sink. Droplets during the spray, then a quieter door when the wash pauses, fit a seal problem or suds at the vent. A dishwasher seal leaking often has a cause you can see with the machine stopped and the door open: a twist, food or grease, a utensil holding the door off the seal, or a gasket out of the bottom channel. Wipe it with a damp cloth. Press a loose stretch back into the channel only if the manual shows that kind of gasket. Do not glue the seal or cut it to fit.

Write down which end is wet. A dishwasher leaking from bottom left corner during the wash is the left end of the gasket, where a fold or a crumb keeps the door from sitting flush. A dishwasher leaking from bottom right corner is the same miss on the right. A rack left out, a sheet pan in the way, or a gasket rolled inward will wet either side. A dishwasher leaking from bottom front, with beads along the lower edge and water only in front of the door, is still the door path. Slide both racks in and close the door until the latch catches. If it does not catch, stop and leave the door lock alone.

Suds, the filter, and a float that cannot rise

What is the most common cause of a dishwasher leaking that an owner can see, before the cabinet is opened, is an oversudsing load, a blocked filter that makes the tub overfill, or a door gasket that is folded, dirty, or not seating. Hand dish soap builds foam that climbs the door, leaves the vent, and runs down the front. A pod plus a squirt of gel, or a dose above what the manual allows, does the same thing. A leaking dishwasher in a new kitchen is often that soap, or a filter still holding bits the install sheet said to rinse.

Rinse the filter only when the manual shows one you may remove. A packed screen lets the fill get ahead of the drain. Debris that pins the float lets filling continue, and you get dishwasher overflow leaking at the door or into the base. Lift the filter as the drawing shows, rinse it, and lock it. A loose filter can weep at the sump. If you see no filter, leave the tub floor alone. A cup or spoon on the float can hold it down. Remove loose items, and leave the float cover on if the manual does not list it as cleaning you do.

Dishwasher leaking water in a wide sheet across the door fits suds or an overfill. A single clean bead at one corner fits the gasket. Cancel the cycle the way that model's manual describes. There is no shared button sequence. Bail a full tub only if you can do it without reaching a wet junction, so the filter is visible. Filter habits are in the maintenance and cleaning notes. Other models are with the dishwashers guides.

With the machine off and the racks out, see whether the lower spray arm is seated and turns by hand if the manual shows that check. Leave its feed tube connected. Close a detergent cup when the manual shows a latch. A broken dispenser is technician work. If the install guide wants a level tub so the door meets the gasket evenly, read a level only while the dishwasher is still installed and the floor is dry.

Water under the tub, at the sink, and while the machine is idle

Dishwasher leaking water from bottom of the cabinet, with a dry gasket, means the water has already left the tub. Think through a supply hose, a drain hose, an overfill into the base, a cracked tub, or a dishwasher pump leaking while the pump runs. The pump moves water during the drain. A puddle with that sound, and a dry door, fits the pump or the drain hose. Hire a qualified technician for that pattern. Pump replacement needs the machine out, power off, and the service steps for that model. This page does not give those steps. Leave any sealed system closed. Do not tip the dishwasher onto its side. A tipped tub empties onto the junction box.

A dishwasher air gap leaking wets the counter first. Many U.S. sinks have a chrome air gap beside the faucet. Spit from that cap during the drain means the air gap, or the hose beyond it, is restricted. Water then runs down the cabinet and sits in front of the door, which looks like a gasket leak until you see the wet counter. Clear a cap that lifts off by hand. Not every home has an air gap. Some use a high loop, described in the install guide. A tub that never emptied overflows on the next fill. Standing water and a pump that hums without moving water are covered in dishwasher not draining.

Dishwasher leaking water when not in use means the controls are off and the puddle still grows. The supply valve may be dripping into the tub, or the last cycle never drained. The shutoff is often under the sink. Turn it only on a dry floor, without touching a wet outlet, and leave the line connected. Do not fill a tub that is already full. On many Bosch models, E15 means water in the base. Confirm that in your manual, then read Bosch dishwasher not draining. A filter rinse does not empty the base pan.

A dishwasher leaking under floor has passed the finish. Water in the subfloor or the ceiling below keeps damaging the house if the machine runs. Stop using it, and tell the technician where the water went.

How to fix a leaking dishwasher at the checks you can see

How to fix a leaking dishwasher, while the machine stays in the cabinet, is the order below. Each step assumes the floor is dry enough to stand on and every outlet you might touch is dry. If either of those is false, use the stop note and skip the hands-on checks.

  1. Make power and water safe

If the floor is soaked or an outlet is wet, leave the plug alone. Shut off the breaker and the water only when you can reach them without standing in the puddle. Write down whether a cycle was running.

  2. Separate the door from the cabinet

On a dry floor, compare the door edge with the toe kick. Beads on the gasket are the door path. A dry gasket and water under the machine are the under-tub path. A wet counter and a spitting air gap are the sink path.

  3. Rule out suds, then the filter

Foam means the wrong soap or too large a dose. Cancel the way the manual names that step, then use only the detergent it allows. Rinse and lock a filter the manual shows. Remove anything sitting on the float. If no filter is visible, leave the tub floor alone.

  4. Inspect the gasket and both lower corners

With the machine stopped, wipe the bottom gasket. Look for a fold, food, or a section out of the channel at either end. Seat a press-in gasket only as the manual draws it. Close the door on racks that are fully in, and stop if the latch does not catch.

  5. Check the sink end and an idle drip

Clear an air gap cap only if it lifts off by hand. If the puddle grows while the dishwasher is off, shut the supply when you can reach it safely and leave the line connected. A full tub belongs on the drain guide, not under another fill.

  6. Stop when the water is under the machine

Water that returns with the pump, a dry door, or water under the floor ends the owner checks. Read the model number and match any code to that manual, including E15 on many Bosch units. Report whether the door was wet, the pump was running, or the machine was idle.

Questions readers ask

Why does a door leak show up at one bottom corner?

Spray hits the gasket while the wash runs, and a fold, a crumb, or a rack left out breaks the seal at one end. Wipe both lower corners with the machine stopped, seat the gasket only if the manual shows that style, and close the door on racks that are fully in. Foam across the door points to suds. One clean bead at a corner points to the gasket.

What is the most common cause of a dishwasher leaking?

What an owner can see is usually too much suds, a blocked filter that lets the tub overfill, or a gasket that is folded, dirty, or not seating. Hand soap and an oversized dose both send foam down the door. Rinse a filter only if the manual shows one. A pump question comes after those checks, when the door stays dry and water still appears under the cabinet.

Can the sink air gap wet the floor in front of the dishwasher?

Yes, when the home has one and the cap spits during the drain. Water hits the counter and runs to the floor in front of the door. Clear debris only from a cap that lifts off by hand. Homes without an air gap often use a high loop from the install guide. A restricted drain can also leave the tub full so the next fill overflows.

Why is there a puddle when the dishwasher is not running?

A growing puddle with the controls off is usually a supply valve dripping into the tub, or water left because the last cycle never drained. Shut the water off only on a dry floor, and leave the line connected. Do not start a cycle on a full tub. If your Bosch manual defines E15 as water in the base, leave the machine off.

Should I replace the pump if water appears only while it runs?

No. Water that appears with the pump sound, while the door gasket stays dry, is a stop. Replacing the pump means pulling the dishwasher with the power off and following that model's service steps. Those steps are not here. Do not tip the machine or open the base. Tell the technician the door was dry and the leak matched the pump.
