GE dishwasher not draining: Nautilus, Cafe, and the filter

Look in the tub before you chase a code. Standing water over a packed filter is a drain problem on that model, and rinsing the filter the manual shows is the first check. A GE dishwasher not draining has to be tied to the model on the tub, because GE does not use one blink chart for every dishwasher. The pattern for your model is printed on GE's support site. Start there: GE service and support. Nautilus-era machines and current Cafe machines are different consoles. Shared filter and hose checks are a short detour to the general drain page, not a copy of a Whirlpool code article.

GE Nautilus dishwasher not draining

A GE Nautilus dishwasher not draining is an older-tub problem wearing a name from a past GE series. The Nautilus label may be on the console or only in the book that shipped with it. Controls, the wash arm, and the way you reach the filter are not the Cafe layout. If you cannot see a filter, do not pry the tub floor to make it match a newer photo. Forcing a cover cracks the sump. Use the manual that matches the model tag, or the support page for that number.

Standing water on a Nautilus is still a drain path: debris at the sump, a kinked hose, an air gap that spits, or a disposal inlet that never had its knockout removed. Those checks are real. A blink count from a stranger's Cafe video is not. Write down any lights, then match them on GE's site for this model. This page will not print a blink chart.

GE Cafe dishwasher not draining

A GE Cafe dishwasher not draining often starts one step earlier than the pump. Many Cafe models place the keypad on the top edge of the door rather than on the front. A cycle that never started leaves a dirty load and gets described as a drain failure. Wake the control the way the manual shows. Some Cafe models also use a control lock. The icon and the key chart are in the manual. There is no single hold time for every Cafe dishwasher.

Many current GE tubs, Cafe included, have a filter the manual says to rinse. Utensils that fall out of a third rack can sit on that cover and block it. Lift the cover only as the drawing shows, rinse it, and lock it back. Labels, glass, and seeds are enough to leave the lower rack in water. If your Cafe manual shows no user filter, stop. Do not improvise one.

Many Cafe controls sit on the top edge of the door, so a cycle that never started can look like a drain failure.

What GE is not

GE will not show Whirlpool's F8 E1, and it will not show Bosch's E24, unless you are reading the wrong badge. Those codes are real on those brands and useless on this door. The GE path is the support-site pattern for your model, then the filter if the manual has one, then the sink end of the hose. Shared air-gap and knockout detail is in dishwasher not draining. The Whirlpool code, if you actually own a Whirlpool, is in Whirlpool dishwasher not draining. Samsung's layout is separate: Samsung dishwasher not draining.

A new GE tied to a new disposal will not drain until the knockout plug is removed. That is plumbing. If you do not do it, stop. Many U.S. sinks have a chrome air gap. Water spitting from it means a restriction. Not every home has an air gap. The rest of the lineup is under dishwashers.

Checks in order

  1. Read the tag and the support page

Nautilus-era and Cafe are not interchangeable. Copy the model number. Open GE's page for that model and read the drain and blink notes there. Ignore a chart that does not list your number.

  2. See if a cycle actually started

On many Cafe models the keys are on the top edge of the door. If the panel is dark or locked, the tub was never asked to drain. Use the manual's lock icon. Do not hold every button.

  3. Use cancel or drain as named

The word on the panel varies. Run the control the manual calls cancel or drain, and listen. Silence is not the same fault as a hum with a full tub.

  4. Rinse the filter this manual shows

Most recent GE dishwashers have one. Nautilus may not look like Cafe. No filter in the drawing means you do not pry. Clear utensils off the cover if a third rack dropped them.

  5. Check the sink, then stop

Spitting air gap, kink, or a knockout still in a new disposal will hold water in any GE. Plumbing that you do not do is a plumber's job. Do not cut the hose.

  6. Stop when the path is clear and the tub is not

A clean filter, a quiet sink connection, and a tub that refills with leftover water means the pump or the hidden hose. Hire a technician. Do not bypass the door switch.

Questions readers ask

Where do I look up a GE dishwasher blink code?

On GE's support site, using the model number from the tub, not from a chart that claims to cover every GE. This site does not print a blink chart because the pattern is model-specific. Write down what the lights do before you clear them, then match that note to the page for your tag. A Nautilus and a Cafe can both blink and mean different things. If the page for your model does not list the pattern you saw, stop guessing and use GE's contact path for that model.

Is a GE Nautilus filter the same part as a Cafe filter?

Do not assume it is. Nautilus is an older GE series. Cafe is a current one, and the tub layout changed. Some current GE dishwashers have a filter the manual says to rinse under the lower rack. An older Nautilus may not. If you cannot see the filter in your manual's drawing, do not pry the sump to match a Cafe photo. Order parts only from the model tag. The wrong cover is how sumps get cracked.

My Cafe dishwasher is full of water and the buttons did nothing. Why?

Many Cafe models put the keypad on the top edge of the door. A dark panel or a control lock means the cycle never started, so there was no drain to fail. Read the lock icon in the manual. There is not one hold time for every Cafe model. If the panel wakes, you hear the pump, and the water stays, then you are in a real drain fault. Check the filter the manual shows and the hose under the sink.

Can I use a Whirlpool F8 E1 fix on my GE?

No. F8 E1 is a slow-drain code on many Whirlpool dishwashers, and a different fault on many Whirlpool washers. A GE panel does not speak that code. Use GE's support page for your model. The physical drain path is similar across brands: filter if you have one, air gap if you have one, and a disposal knockout on a new install. The general drain guide covers that path. The code list does not transfer.

The dishwasher was just installed and will not drain. What now?

Check the install, not the pump warranty, first. A garbage disposal inlet is sealed with a knockout until someone removes it. The hose can look connected and still be blocked. That removal is plumbing. If you did not install the drain, call the installer. Also look for a kink and for a hose pushed too deep into the sink tailpiece. Do not run repeated cycles to force a plug out. If the knockout is already gone and the filter is clear, then it is time for a technician.
