Microwave and small appliance troubleshooting

These two appliances cause a lot of searches and a lot of bad advice. One can hold a lethal charge. The other can injure a hand in a second.

A garbage disposal at the sink. The chamber stays closed. Hands stay out. The microwave cabinet is not opened in this drawing.

  1. Sink flange. The metal ring in the sink opening.
  2. Splash guard. The rubber flaps in that opening. You can see them from the sink.
  3. Hopper. The body under the sink. Do not put a hand inside it.
  4. Dishwasher inlet. The small port where the dishwasher drain hose connects, on many installs.
  5. Reset button. The button on the bottom of the unit. Press it only with the power off.

Two machines dominate this section because they dominate the searches: the microwave and the garbage disposal. They fail in ordinary ways, and the unsafe advice around both of them is unusually confident. Hearthline's rule is short. If the next step opens a microwave cabinet or puts a hand in a disposal, the guide is over.

Microwaves

A microwave that does not start at all may have a door latch that is not closing. You can see that without tools. A microwave that lights up, runs the fan, and turns the tray, while the food stays cold, has a problem in the high-voltage section. Unplug it and stop. The capacitor inside can hold a charge that is lethal even after the cord is pulled. Do not remove the outer cover, do not discharge anything, and do not replace a magnetron from a video.

Also rule out the boring causes before you assume a failure. The cup may be empty of water, the time may be a few seconds, or the dish may be something the oven cannot heat. Do not run the oven empty. The full stop-here guide is microwave not heating. Wiping the cavity and the door is a separate job, with the oven unplugged, in how to clean a microwave.

Garbage disposals

A disposal with no sound and a disposal that hums are different faults. No sound leads to the reset button on the bottom, the wall switch, and the outlet under the sink, with the power off before you reach into the cabinet. A hum means the motor is trying and the shredder ring is jammed. InSinkErator documents a 1/4-inch hex socket on the bottom to free a jam, and a reset button after the jam is clear. Never put a hand in the chamber. Use tongs and a light.

Read garbage disposal not working for the silent case and garbage disposal humming but not working for the jam. A jam you can free with the power isolated is how to unclog a garbage disposal. Badger disposals are an InSinkErator household line. Current units use that style of reset and hex socket, but the sheet in the box is the confirmation for your unit.

Coffee and countertop ovens

A drip coffee maker and a Keurig are different machines. Use how to clean a coffee maker for a carafe machine and how to clean and descale a Keurig only for that brewer, and only with the cleaner that model’s manual allows. An air fryer basket is how to clean an air fryer. Unplug it and let it cool before the basket comes out.

A dishwasher that will not drain into a new disposal is often the knockout plug, not a bad dishwasher pump. That connection is explained in dishwasher not draining.
